Burgess Hill 2018
Collaboration Grovebridge Gardens, HawkesNest
This bungalow was transformed with an extension offering views with three aspects. The client is a keen gardener and cook with a love of small batch homegrown fruits, herbs and vegetables. Having travelled extensively but now working from home, the garden is in daily view throughout the year, and needs to offer beauty and calm, with practical activity and relaxation spaces.
The new extension offered potential to reorient the house and celebrate a new front entrance. With the addition of a garage and workshop unit, the landscape design needed to logically connect six external doors with four potential destinations between the house and the outbuildings on two distinct levels. In the build process, a large apple tree that no longer fruited was felled, but kept as a timber resource.
The design resolves all these challenges, while adding spaces to sit and relax, and showcases much of the apple wood.
